Yummy and delicious - chocolates have been a (the) favourite treat for men, women and children the world over; with demand for premium quality chocolates now at an all time high. However, not all chocolates are the same, and not all types of chocolates are good for your health.

Generally its safe to conclude that the darker, bitter variety of chocolates are more beneficial than light milky or white chocolates. Dark chocolates have been described as a superfood by many nutritionists and scientists, even more so now with the recent popularisation of raw or natural chocolate. Dark chocolates are excellent stress busters and are also purported to induce romantic feelings - hence the connection between Valentines and chocolate.

The Big Chocolate Myth

Many people feel that eating chocolates is a bad for you and unhealthy... full of fat, ruins your teeth (from sugar) etc. While this is true can be true when consuming large quantities of cheap high-sugar chocolates; dark chocolate (containing more than 70% cocoa) are much better for you.

Dark chocolate contains more pure, natural cocoa solids that in its natural state is very high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals - the very reason why we love and eat chocolate every day (not that we need an excuse!).

Are all types of chocolate fattening?

Most chocolate lovers guiltily eat their 'daily fix' - knowing that it is high in fat and fear putting on weight... Most health-conscious tend to avoid chocolates because of this, but it may not be that black and white.

Dark chocolate contains fat, and it has three types of fats out of which one is monounsaturated, and the other two are saturated fats. Good news for the health conscious is that all three fats in dark chocolate are beneficial for you. In fact, pure chocolate in its natural form indeed has been shown to help you lose weight!

How safe is chocolate for your skin?

Studies have shown that consuming dark chocolates for extended time periods can help protect your skin from the dangers of the suns UV rays and that natural chocolate also improves blood flow to your skin. Containing flavanols chocolate the cocoa helps get rid of stress hormones that are responsible for destroying collagen in your skin.

Helps in getting rid of free radicals

A potent antioxidant, dark chocolates help in getting rid of free radicals from our bodies, to protect you from a wide range of potential diseases. These disease-causing free radicals are compounds produced by chemical reactions inside the body, and they keep 'floating around like scavengers' until they are removed efficiently or neutralised.

Along with other well-known superfoods like broccoli, spinach, blueberries and carrots - pure chocolate really can help boost your bodies natural immune system and help ward off a whole host of diseases (as part of a healthy lifestyle with good lifestyle habits like a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and regular exercise regime).

Dark chocolates are super nutritious

A single bar of dark chocolate weighing 100g and containing more than 70% of cocoa gives you following astounding nutrients:

  • 11g fiber
  • 67% of RDA for iron
  • 58% of RDA for magnesium
  • 89% of the RDA for copper
  • 98% of RDA for manganese
  • Also: zinc, potassium, phosphorus, and selenium

How much chocolate per day should you eat?

We've now concluded that dark chocolates are actually good for you as: they make your skin healthy, is full of antioxidants, boost your mood and actually, just tastes delicious! However, this may not be a good enough excuse to eat copious quantities of chocolate every day, although you could try, but a more sensible approach is to enjoy everything in moderation. Except for over the holidays, Christmas or valentines of course! Quality is definitely more important (and satisfying) than quantity, so do your research first and buy only from reputable artisan brands who are transparent about their ingredients sourcing.

Although there is no hard and fast rule in this regard yet, do not eat more than an ounce few times in a week. Remember to pick up dark chocolate variety containing more than 70% of cocoa and preferably organic and single origin where you can - you'll thank us for it! And as always make sure chocolate is part of a healthy balanced diet, with lots of fruits and vegetables and enough exercise. Even the world’s best chocolate cannot substitute for the health benefits of eating a diet rich in a variety of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits.

What kind of chocolate is the healthiest for you?

Not all brands are equal, and not all chocolate bars are the same! Always read the label, understand the ingredients (remember you are buying cocoa, not sugar!) and make a positive impact by shopping for fairtrade, organic and brands that are environmentally responsible.

Cocoa is rich in antioxidants. Make sure that the chocolate you are buying, irrespective of its brand, includes no less than 70% of the cocoa content. The more cocoa the less milk and sugar, which means that it's healthier.

What is white, milk vs dark chocolate?

Did you know that white chocolates aren’t really chocolates at all as they do not contain cocoa content? These so-called chocolates are made using cocoa butter, milk, sugar, milk fat and an emulsifier that holds all other ingredients together.

There can be no comparison between dark chocolate and milk chocolate as the two are entirely different from each other. White chocolates are creamy and fatty whereas dark chocolates are bitter and less sugary than white chocolates.

Now that you know how good dark chocolate is for your well-being, you should feel a little less guilty about buying good quality dark chocolate. In fact, we recommend you always, keep some quality chocolate in your refrigerator, ready to eat it whenever you are feeling stressed out or in need an instant mood enhancer, especially in the dark winter months.

And as always, we recommend cake! Try our best chocolate cake {Download printable Recipe} for afternoon tea or special Sunday treat.
